Donatello step by step by DeadPea Donatello step by step by DeadPea
I really like watching guides and videos of how people draw, so I felt like sharing the way I worked on this particular drawing. It's a simple step by step but hopefully someone might find it interesting as well.

Photoshop CS5 with an Intuos4.

Download for high-res.

I love how you did this. ITS AMAZING. I love art myself, and even took art classes but im still not that good. Same goes for the other drawing/paintings for the other brothers.

This drawing/painting is really sad though since i love the turtles with almost all of my heart and im a HUGE Donatello fan since im most like him.

Do you have a version that shows how you do your layers and set up the composition as a whole?

:icondeadpea:
DeadPea Featured By Owner Aug 5, 2013  Hobbyist General Artist
I don't. But I can tell you.
The top layer is for the outline you see on the second panel. Then there is a layer for each different flat colour you see on the 3rd panel. On top of each of the flat colours there is a layer for the shading corresponding to that area.

For example, for the green of the skin there is a layer for the flat colour and on top a layer for the shadows and highlights of the skin. The layer at the bottom of the stack is the background.

This all makes tweaking the colours at the end much easier because each different part is on a different layer.

The details such as bruises and blood may also be on a different layer so I can ajust them and not mess up the skin shading for example.

Your artwork is amazing, and I'm really REALLY happy that you decided to share with us the process of how you do it! It was really simple, it almost seemed. But I'm sure that once I try to do it on my own, I'll become frustrated. There was only one thing that confused me a little bit, if you wouldn't mind explaining! What do you mean by 'different layers'? I'm completely new to drawing and will need some professional tips. :blush:^^;

Thank you very much ;) It might be hard to explain if you haven't used software like photoshop before, but you can have different parts of your drawing on different layers like invisible sheets of paper that all stack on top of each other.

This allows you to work on different parts of the drawing/painting/photo, without messing up other parts. It's a great way to keep your work organized as well in case you need to go back and fix/change something.

Here is a useful introduction:

Very interesting, so there is no Leonardo,
Hum... I think I'm going to try to do it ^^ if you don't mind :)
I'll tell you when it's done, and again, thanks for those three amazing arts, they are just perfect, you should paint more, you painted (as far as I'm concerned) the best TMNT art I've seen in this website ^^

Thank you, for this step by step drawing and colouring technique. I find painting using a software and mouse to be both jarring and degrading to my self-esteem.

It really helps when I look at the way others attempt their colouring as it inspires me to try yet again. I really appreciate this.
